My Pool Safety Story

Sometimes I go to the pool.

The pool can be fun.
I might see water, toys, towels, and people swimming.

Water can feel nice.
Water can also be deep.

I stay safe at the pool.

Before I go near the water, I stop.
I wait for my grown-up.

My grown-up helps me stay safe.

I do not go in the pool by myself.
I wait until my grown-up says, “It is time to swim.”

When I am near the pool, I use walking feet.
Walking feet help keep my body safe.

I keep my hands to myself.
I do not push people near the water.

I listen for pool rules.

My grown-up might say:

“Stop.”
“Wait.”
“Hold my hand.”
“Come back.”
“Time to get out.”

When I hear my grown-up’s words, I try to listen right away.
Listening helps me stay safe.

If I want to swim, I can say:

“Swim please.”
“Help me.”
“Can I go in?”
“Come with me.”

I can wear my floaties or safety vest if my grown-up says I need it.

When I am in the pool, my grown-up stays close to me.
I can splash, kick, and play safely.

If water gets on my face, I can wipe it off.
I can ask for a break.

When swim time is finished, my grown-up will say, “All done.”
I might feel sad or mad when pool time is over.

That is okay.

I can take a deep breath.
I can wrap up in my towel.
I can say, “Bye-bye pool.”

The pool is fun when I follow safety rules.

I am learning to be safe at the pool.
My grown-up is proud of me.

If I Get Lost in a Store

Sometimes I go to the store with my grown-up.

The store can be big.
There may be lights, sounds, people, carts, and shelves.

I stay close to my grown-up.

Sometimes I might look at something interesting.
Sometimes my grown-up might be hard to see.

If I cannot see my grown-up, I might feel scared.
That is okay.

I can stop my feet.

I do not run.
I do not leave the store.
I do not go outside.

I stay where I am or go to a safe helper.

A safe helper might be a store worker.
A store worker may wear a name tag, vest, or uniform.

I can say:

“I am lost.”
“I need help.”
“I cannot find my grown-up.”
“My name is ____.”

The safe helper can help me find my grown-up.

I can also look for a cashier at the front of the store.
A cashier works at the checkout.

I can wait with the safe helper.

My grown-up is looking for me.
My grown-up will come.

When my grown-up finds me, I can hold their hand.

I am safe.

I am learning what to do if I get lost.
My grown-up is proud of me.
